Frequently Asked Questions

Are there any ATMs or banks on Nusa Lembongan?

Unfortunately there are no ATMs or banks on the island although it is possible to pay with Visa or MasterCard (+approx 3%) at a few hotels and restaurants.  The best bet is to bring cash rupiah with you or, if you get really stuck, you can exchange foreign currency with one of the local money changers.

When is the best time to dive around Nusa Lembongan?

The diving around Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Penida is fantastic year round and generally visibility is 20-30m. Mola molas can be sighted from September to the beginning of November and mantas can be found at Manta Point year round, although it can be more difficult to reach the site from July to September. The best conditions actually for seeing the manta ray are often found during the rainy season, from January to March. Water temperature varies considerably throughout the year and even changes from day to day. It is normally 25-29°C from January to August and then the temperature begins to drop for the mola season, where 18-25°C is more common. By December the water warms up again.

Don’t discount the rainy season for a trip over to Bali and Nusa Lembongan. Daytime temperatures are very comfortable at this time of year and many tourists enjoy escaping the crowds of high season and the benefits of lower accommodation prices and wider choices.

What type of wetsuit will I need?

Big Fish provides 5mm full length wetsuits to all divers. If you want to bring your own, you could get away with a 3mm full length suit from January to August. From September to December a 5mm full length or thicker is advisable (and if you have a hood, you’ll probably be glad of it!)

Do I need malaria tablets on the Island?

As with Bali, the 3 islands of Nusa Lembongan, Cenningan and Penida are all free from malaria. Malaria medication may be necessary however, if you are travelling to other parts of Indonesia, so please consult with your doctor beforehand.

Is Nusa Lembongan safe for children?

Nusa Lembongan is an excellent place to bring children of all ages. The beaches are safe, the locals super friendly and even though there can be strong currents around the island at certain times, they are never felt in Lembongan Bay itself, which is ideal for paddling and swimming with young children. Older children will also enjoy snorkeling in the bay and the reef is easily reached by one of the many local boats available. The mangroves is another great place to take small children, as the water is perfect for paddling and the small but pretty beach is clean and safe.

Is there a Doctor on Nusa Lembongan?

Yes. There are several doctors on the island and a good clinic in Jungutbatu which has an onsite dispensary. Minor ailments are treated easily here, but more serious conditions will be referred to Bali, where there are hospitals of international standard.

If I have an existing medical condition, will I still be able to dive?

Certainly there are some medical conditions which are not compatible with diving. As diving instructors, we do not have the medical qualifications to decide whether an individual with an illness/injury is able to dive. This is the responsibility of a medical professional alone. All students must complete a PADI medical questionnaire prior to commencement of their course. A “yes” answer to any question must be assessed by a doctor. Feel free to download the medical questionnaire here and take a look at the questions. If you think there may be an issue, check with your doctor first and get them to sign the second page if they consider you fit for diving. This will save a lot of disappointment once you are on the island. For fun divers it is your own responsibility to assess your ability to dive.

What is the electricity supply like on the island?

We enjoy 24 hours of electricity here, though there can be the odd power cut. Electricity sockets take the European two pin plug.
