Are you planning to take yoga classes or learn to dive in Nusa Lembongan? Why not do both, yoga and scuba, at Big Fish Diving and the Yoga Shack?

It may sound like an unlikely combination of activities but yoga and scuba have common attributes and principles including breathing and relaxation techniques and they both improve your fitness, stamina and even your meditation! Read on to find out more about yoga and diving in Nusa Lembongan.

yoga and scuba

Breathing Techniques: Just as breathing is pivotal in yoga it’s also a major consideration in scuba diving. During scuba dives it’s important to focus on keeping your breathing consistent by breathing in and out slowly and steadily. The number one rule in scuba diving is never, ever hold your breath and your instructor will watch to make sure you are making regular bubbles.

Relaxation Techniques: For those of you who already practice yoga you’ve probably learned some techniques for relaxation. Relaxation techniques are a great asset when scuba diving because it’s important to stay calm and move slowly underwater. Keeping a calm and relaxed mind set will increase your comfort level and will make your air last longer – meaning longer dives at our awesome Lembongan dive sites.

Fitness and Stamina: Yoga is a fantastic way to develop and tone muscle (especially core muscles) as well as increasing your stamina and suppleness. Scuba diving relies on swimming which is also a great way to maintain and improve your fitness. You’ll find that using scuba diving fins improves your upper and lower leg muscles, maintains supple hips and leg joints, and tones posterior and core muscles. Scuba diving is also a low impact activity which can be enjoyed by all ages (from 10 years upwards). It’s scientifically proven that physical exercise of any form releases chemicals in your body called endorphins. Endorphins interact with the receptors in your brain and trigger a positive feeling in your body. It’s a win-win for the body and mind!

meditating with the fish while scuba diving

Meditating with the Fishes: We know that stress negatively impacts both mental and physical well-being. Meditating is a great way of alleviating stress but it can be surprisingly difficult to do successfully. Once you have taken your PADI Open Water in Nusa Lembongan you’ll be confident in your abilities as a diver and find that you can relax more easily underwater. Underwater there are no cell phones, televisions, bosses, kids or other distractions. Clearing your mind of everything aside from the stunning natural beauty around you has never been so easy! Meditation not only reduces stress, it’s also been shown to improve concentration, sleep patterns, the immune system and reduce the chances of suffering a heart attack or stroke. The biggest benefit, and the one that really affects us, is that meditation leads to an all-round more balanced and calmer life.

Here at Big Fish Diving in Nusa Lembongan we offer a full range of PADI courses from beginner through to professional levels. If you’d like to learn to dive in Nusa Lembongan (or take your next level of PADI course) contact us for more information or to make a booking.
